West Virginia Mountain Bike Association | News, Articles, and More - o!Pam
  • Dirt Rag and Joeys Bike Shop Signed on as Sponsors For Cheat Mtn Ultra
Free Dirt Rag Swag to all participants! Thanks be to Joeys for providing the prize table. The Ultra Series is gaining notoriety as the best all-day fun on a bike you can get. Regardless of your speed it just takes determination to make it to the finish. Hammer has the checkpoints fully stocked to keep you feeling strong on the course and some Recoverite at the finish. THESE RACES ARE NOT EXPERT ONLY!! SPORTS BRING IT ON DOWN AND GAIN SOME SERIOUS FITNESS!!! (Beginners might want to do the Lite)
  • Big Bear 2x12 Mountain Fest Voted Most Fun Event, Sets WVMBA Record for Kids Race Numbers
Sometimes the fun gets lost in the dust when you're racing, not at Big Bear Lake. Multiple laps on a fun course, team event, bluegrass music, incredible payouts, beer and rock gardens, fun riding, kids racing, camping, you can't pack much more fun into a weekend. NEW RECORD of 47 KIDS RACERS!!! These kids want a piece of the action!! Old guys, watch out WeeVMBA is takin over!!
  • Have You Got A Date For The 2x12?
Bikes, Bluegrass, and Beverages. Need I say more? Team lap racing changes the game and makes you rely on someone else. Consistency is also very important. Come enjoy the atmosphere and great trails, then some fun camping and hanging out complete a good biking weekend. Bring the kids!! Nationwide Insurance is raffling 3 random $50 prizes to kids race entrants. A real mtb kid's course gets them in the woods and having fun. Non-racers welcome to fun ride and camp and enjoy the festivities.
  • Roadies Beware, Massanutten Throws Down The Real Mountain Bike Experience
If you don't like hazards, you best stay off Massanuttens trails, especially Kaylors Knob. Rock garden after rock garden tested your technical ability, and the supa-dupa rocky creek bed made you walk at least once, I don't care who you were or what bike you had. Plenty of climbing, but the downhills made up for it. 5 times up the mountain meant 5 times down!
  • WVMBA Trail Care Crew Works in Mysterious Ways
You are asked to go on an epic ride, then out on the trail 3 hand saws come out, and all of a sudden a 6 hour ride becomes eight. Huckleberry Trail is officially clear from top to bottom on Spruce Knob. My argument is that you have to get off anyways to climb over the log, why not take an extra five minutes to cut it? Thanks to our previous efforts, Allegheny Mountain Trail's final 3 mile downhill to Whites Run was superfast!
  • Financial Report--End of May, 2013
  • Massanutten Hoo-Ha! Promises Epic Ride to XXC Racers
GO LONG at the WVMBA ULTRA SERIES! Its a long ways over that mountain, but they have some great trails there that keep getting better every year, making it worth the drive. Kaylor's Knob has some unforgettable rock gardens and a switchback DH into the valley below. They will have limited on-site registration, so please pre-register on-line if at all possible beforehand to save some hassle.
  • Why I Didn't Beat You In The Race - Top 10 Reasons
Read on and see if anyone has hit you with these right after you passed them or after the finish.
  • WVMBA Names Trail MVP - Joe Fraas
We're giving away a set of 29r Ignitors, and an entry into the Cheat Mtn Ultra, to Joe for all his hard work and long driving. Every time we had a trail day he came down from the Pittsburgh area. We really appreciate the help getting our trails open so that we can have races. The WVMBA Trail Care Crew has been in overdrive this year cleaning up from Sandy. Everyone's tight on time, make some time for your trails!
  • Race Around The Bend Throws Down the Cash!
We're not all about the money, but it does put gas in the car. North Bend's Race Around the Bend this weekend is giving an extra $100 to fastest expert and sport men and women in addition to their other prizes. Well-built trails traverse the ridges of the park, giving you some uphill suffering and downhill excitement. Don't forget to bring the kids out for the kids race!
  • There is Hope For a Junior Expert Class
If you were down at Canaan this weekend, you saw a gang of kids out on the trails tearing it up. Who says mountain biking is an adult sport anyways? We here at WVMBA want as many kids at the races as we can get. So round em up and bring em down to the next race, they're guaranteed to have fun.
  • WVMBA / IMBA EPIC RIDE Off Spruce Knob is the Ride of a Lifetime
What's more epic than climbing up to the highest point in WV and then dropping off all the way on singletrack? Nothing that I've ridden, let me tell you. Shorter vehicle shuttle options are available if you want to burn the gas in two cars to do it. This ride has awesome views, technical singletrack descents, and killer climbing, what more do you need?
  • We're Goin Big Or We're Goin Home / Where's The Beef?
We're bumping up the prize money here at WVMBA. Why, because we can. We're raising the ante for racing in WV, and you overcompetitive race fiends are going to benefit from it. We're topping $10,000 in cash and prizes this year for series payouts. All expert first places are going up to $450. Pro/Ex male and female winners are going up to at least $500. The Ultra series is paying out for real this year for the first time.
  • Trail Day Planned for Cheat Mtn Saturday May 25th
We're at it again. Its been a tough winter for trails especially in the higher elevations. If you are interested in lending a hand please contact info@wvmba for more details. Meet at 9:00am at Camp Pioneer where we can carpool to the top of the mountain and work on some very scenic National Forest trails next to Shaver's Fork. These are true backcountry trails with lots of camping, hunting and fishing opportunities as well.
  • The Pain in the Wayne!
If you didn't hurt a little on this course you just train too dern much. Steep climb after steep climb was sure to make your legs soft, with some crazy steep slick downhills where you saw tracks where someone had already gone off the edge. RVMBA has done a great job building and maintaining these trails. Its great trail organizations like this that provide the awesome trails for our race series. Without them there would be no trails and therefore no races.
  • WV Has its Very Own IMBA Epic
The secret is out! The Spruce Ride is officially an IMBA Epic Ride. Check out the IMBA site for more details. http://www.mtbepicrides.com/p/itinerary.html http://www.imba.com/epics/spruce-knob Don't forget to bring food and water with you on this ride! There are some springs along the way so you don't have to carry as much water.
  • Help Save Joey and Mandi's Trails!
As you may already know, Hurricane Sandy destroyed trails in the higher elevations. Help us get trails for Joey and Mandi to ride to save them from a nasty fate-road biking only. Contact info@wvmba.com if you live or like to ride in the Elkins area and would like to help us clear out trails on Cheat Mountain. This is a pristine area of Mon National Forest accessible from Files Creek Road in Beverly(just 2 miles south of Elkins).
  • Ultra Series vs. Point Series Showdown!
No not really, the Wayne kept its date from last year, but Crying Wolf Challenge had to be this weekend to fit in with their title sponsors plans. We try not to have conflicting dates within our own series, but this just worked out this way. Click here to see if you are an Ultra racer or Points Series racer.
  • Go Fast at the Cole Subaru Crying Wolf Challenge in Bluefield Sunday
Race organizers will be giving out a free race jersey AND a tshirt to the first 50-60 race participants. New race course that is longer and more rideable and a pre-race mixer at Cole Subaru at 6pm on Saturday!!! Free camping!! www.cryingwolfchallenge.com
  • Go Long at the Wayne Ultra Outside of Marietta Ohio
If you haven't tried an Ultra before, this might be a good one to start with. RVMBA has put a lot of effort into making and maintaining some sweet trails in the Wayne National Forest. Smooth, flowy trails wind up down and around some pretty big hills.
